Writing articles with Keith Rogers

by John Ellard

Keith Rogers was leader of the September session on Writing Articles

Keith presented us with a plan to help structure our article writing:

• Consider your chosen subject.

• What makes it interesting?

• Who is your audience?

• What is your opening sentence?

He went on to define Non Fiction writing as trying to persuade and influence an audience. Writers need to capture an audience’s attention early on in the article, by gaining and holding the reader’s interest. The choosing of a suitably evocative title and the use of short, clear, sentences was recommended

Keith was an effective Zoom “ringmaster”, providing us with plenty of time for chatting and for writing. He used Zoom’s Breakout Room facility to particularly good effect by enabling the participants to discuss, formulate and present their opening sentences between themselves before presenting them to the group as a whole.

Members were encouraged to submit their finished articles to Keith who would then gather them together for posting on one of the Bilston Writers Facebook groups.
