Urban Poetry with Nick Pearson

By Ros Woolner

What makes a poem urban? Nick brought some fabulous poems to our October workshop for us to look at:

'Friday night in the Royal Station Hotel' by Philip Larkin 'The Girls on the Make-Up Counter' by Jonathan Edwards 'Hen Night' by Catherine Smith 'Thames' by John Challis 'Travelodge' by Patrick McGuinness

We discussed atmosphere, men writing about women, what difference it would make if you rewrote 'Hen Night' as 'Stag Night', the effect of lists, and the fact that you can be moved by poems you don't understand.

Nick is the Wellington Resident Poet. His poetry pamphlet Barista and full collection Made in Captivity are available from Offa's Press.
