The Power of Repetition with Emma Purshouse

By Ros Woolner

September's workshop was all about the power of repetition, one of poetry's building blocks.

We tackled list poems, which can be a great way to kick-start your writing. Emma's tip: start with a title like 'Things my mother taught me' or '24 things I'd like to have a conversation with'.

And we looked at some forms that make use of repetition: the ghazal, the pantoum, the villanelle and the specular.

Emma's advice: there should be a reason for the repetition. The form should fit the content.

Emma Purshouse is a former Poet Laureate of Wolverhampton. Her poetry collections Close and It's Honorary, Bab are available from Offa's Press. You can find out more about her and where she will be performing on her website.
