Crime writing with Keith Rogers

In May, we moved online and met on Zoom for a session on crime writing. Keith gave us a planning sheet to help us think about the various aspects of a crime story: setting, detective, crime/mystery, victim and clues.

As Keith pointed out, the crime needn’t be murder and we came up with plenty of others, including identity theft, trespass, vandalism, arson, fraud and smuggling.

The setting may influence your choice of characters, e.g. if your crime is committed in a stately home. Or you could deliberately write about a character who is out of place in your chosen setting. And the decade your story is set in will determine what means of communication are available to your characters.

Having thought about what kind of crime story we wanted to write and discussed it in small groups using Zoom's breakout rooms, we spent some time writing an opening paragraph and came back together for a read-around, masterfully chaired by Keith with the help of the mute/unmute button!

Members were encouraged to post any completed stories inspired by this session on our closed Facebook group.
