NaNoWriMo

At October’s meeting of Bilston Writers’, we were introduced to NaNoWriMo [National Novel Writing Month] by Karen. Her workshop was well-prepared, informative and very entertaining. Even if we don’t all feel we can compete, the idea certainly makes you question whether you are achieving your full potential and making the most of your writing schedule.

NaNoWriMo was formed in 1999 in California and 21 individuals took part. 6 finished. Today, it has grown tremendously and participants stem from many countries.

50,000 words a month may not fit into everyone’s schedule, but it was a reminder we all need to recognise our own capabilities. Maybe 500 words a day is going to appeal to others, but that is still a respectable 3,500 a week. It might be worth discussing techniques and helpful suggestions further at another meeting. One tip that I have found helpful is, stop in the middle of a sentence. It will be easier to pick up the story next time.

Karen taught us a valuable lesson and for those who intend to compete, may I wish you the best of luck. It might result in that novel you have always intended to write. Thank you Karen.
