Journals to submit work to for publication

The group looked at several journals which Bilston Writers members could investigate to see if they would like to enter their work for possible publication.

Women's Weekly – Fiction: Short stories. www.womansweekly.com/fiction

Mslexia – for submissions by women only. But men can subscribe. Poetry and short stories. Of very high quality. Lots of “prompts” and articles encouraging writing. Lists of competitions. https://mslexia.co.uk/

Bare Fiction – The annual Bare Fiction Prizes for Poetry, Flash Fiction and Short Story open from May/June and have a deadline of October 31st 2018. Quite arty. http://www.barefictionmagazine.co.uk/

Interpreter's House - “The Interpreter’s House is suspending print journals. However we will be publishing online from Issue #69”. This journal has new editors and is looking for new poetry writers. Recommended. www.theinterpretershouse.com

Under the Radar – co editor is Jane Commane who is editor of Nine Arches Press.

Poetry and short stories. Recommended. Submissions window for poetry is Nov 1-30th 2018. For short stories is Dec 1-31st 2018.

See terms of entry: Although submissions are free, they do prefer entrants who have subscribed. Poetry seems to be dominant. They are always looking for new poets.

There is Nine Arches Primers which are for emerging poets. Entry dates: poetry collections: 1 - 31st Oct 2018. But read entry conditions carefully for this, must have been published already. http://ninearchespress.com/

Cannon's Mouth (Birmingham) - Poetry. Highly recommended as it is very readable. The deadline for submitting work for inclusion in the Cannon's Mouth is the 15th of the month before publication. The Cannon's Mouth is published in March, June, September and December each year.

There is a Cannon Poet's Sonnet or Not 2018 competition with closing date of 31 Oct 2018. Ros Woolner and Jane Seabourne were highly commended for their 2017 entries.

Rialto – Published 3 times a year. There are submission windows. Its 2018 competition on Nature, now closed, had a prize of £1000 for first prize. The website has examples of poetry already published. https://www.therialto.co.uk

V Press - “1. V. is for very. We publish work that is very very.“ A small press. Interesting to look at their web site. http://vpresspoetry.blogspot.com

Also Bilston Magazine and Black Country Bugle

Tips: 1. Look at the type of work published in a particular journal.

2. Write for your audience. (which suits you)

3. Have a budget for subscriptions and for submissions.

4. Do subscribe to support poetry and short story publications.

5. Read entry conditions carefully.
